A Fresh (foodie) View of NYC
Woah, what a busy little time I have had! But I am finally back in my studio, phew. My last trip was to NYC for a trade-only show. I won’t bore you with the schlepp. Suffice it to say that it took two days to pack up the cube truck, two days to drive down – luckily shared with the lovely Alissa Kloet of Keephouse – , and two days to set up singlehandedly, et cetera. You can get a feel for it in these 21 seconds:
There was a lot of last-minute running around.

What I did want to tell you is that I had a markedly different experience of NYC than I did last time.
Part of it was that I managed to hit some really good food spots. First, lunch at The Spotted Pig – which felt like being home, it’s so much like Halifax’s Fieldguide.

Ippudo was a highlight.

But nothing was as thrilling as my visit to Maison Premiere in Brooklyn. Oh my! The atmosphere delightfully catapulted me right back to Paris.

Each dish was balanced in its flavours and textures so very gorgeously, and the delivery by the impeccably dressed and mannered staff was a thing of beauty. This, my friends, is definitely worth the long but easy train ride from Manhatten. It was a highlight of my trip, gladly shared with my travel buddy Alissa and also my delightfully outrageous hotel roommate Jana Bookholt of Swainstreet Woodworking.
But the best part of this month is that my daughter Emma is home for a visit from Germany, where she seems to be making her home permanently.

I shall treasure every moment I get with her during her short stay here. How lucky is it that she enjoys hanging out in the studio and making things!

That is a nice story,…
