*Caveat on using the term “recycled gold”:

While I am very careful to source my precious metals only from SCS® certified suppliers (SCS® stands for Supply Chain Sustainability; they are the global leader in the field of sustainability standards and third-party certification). Most of my precious metals suppliers are also members of the Responsible Jewellery Council. However, I want to point out that ‘recycling gold' is not what is commonly understood by the term.

True recycling avoids things ending up in landfills. Gold, of course, wouldn’t.

Instead, gold is simply melted, refined and repurposed.

Although SCS® certified refineries must maintain auditable records of their suppliers, there are loopholes globally which make it very easy for gold from unregulated and/or illegal sources to enter their supply chain.

This makes even 'certified recycled' gold untraceable.

On Excellence: An Ode to Joe

I am not a food writer. All I know is that Chef Joe MacLellan makes food that completely blows my socks off. And he will no longer be doing this (for now). And that makes me super sad. Joe has…

Exhale

I snuck away. Very far away. An almost silly 30 hours travel far away, to the remote lake Atitlan in rural Guatemala. A friend of a friend had moved there, among a fairly well represented expat US/Canadian community. Otherwise, I…

This is a very busy time of year for use makers. Now that the shows are finished, I am still finishing more Onefooter rings with gems every day. I managed to get a few quick photos of the newest additions…

Match

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you will know that I just finished a series of shows across the country: first Vancouver, then Toronto, and finally Halifax. It is a curious thing: to take the artist out of…

Me, too

three, actually.   This wave of anger and tenderness, which has breeched its virtual banks and spills into real-life conversations daily. It makes my daughters call me to have deep conversations. The aspect I am most grateful for is the spreading…

‘Good’ Art

I had the wonderful opportunity to see Spanish dance troupe Compañía Sharon Fridman this weekend here in Halifax.  Led by award winning Israeli choreographer, Sharon Fridman, this remarkable contact-dance based company from Madrid has toured Europe and Asia extensively, and Halifax…
