… with a ring.
Remember: “Schmuck” is this avantgarde contemporary jewellery exhibition which is
held inside, and as part of, the annual trade and crafts fair in Munich. So I spent plenty of time looking at lots of fabulous crafts (including, by the way, amazing hand-crafted herbal bitters “Mariazeller Edelbitter”).
Then my eye was caught by the work of Mr. Dieter Dill’.
I stopped to look at it more closely, and ended up having the most wonderful conversation with this designer/maker. I loved not only his work, but his lovely attitude and very sparkly eyes. It was good to talk to a maker who has been in the business a long time. We were discussing making pieces which are for special occasions, and making pieces which are for everyday wear, and – most interestingly- we were discussing pricing of such work. How can one make a living making unique things by hand , and still be able to make them affordable for those who fall in love with them and do not have dispensible income (for example, a self-employed artist like myself!).
The ring I fell in love with is not on Mr.Dill’s website, but it was similar to this piece:
The ring in question was a large silver disc of considerable depth, with a cut-out and Dieter’s trade-mark little figures in it, gold. Amazingly, he hand carves all the tiny figures. This kind of ring one wears for special occasions. I am still hoping to get permission to get the actual photo of the ring, if he has it, but haven’t heard back from him. Dieter, if you read this: can I please show my friends the ring I fell in love with, and sadly had to walk away from? Bitte!!!
