All jewellery is handmade and shipped from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and therefore is exempt from tariffs for USA customers under CUSMA, the free-trade agreement. I always ship with a certificate of origin for customs.

*Caveat on using the term “recycled gold”:

While I am very careful to source my precious metals only from SCS® certified suppliers (SCS® stands for Supply Chain Sustainability; they are the global leader in the field of sustainability standards and third-party certification). Most of my precious metals suppliers are also members of the Responsible Jewellery Council. However, I want to point out that ‘recycling gold' is not what is commonly understood by the term.

True recycling avoids things ending up in landfills. Gold, of course, wouldn’t.

Instead, gold is simply melted, refined and repurposed.

Although SCS® certified refineries must maintain auditable records of their suppliers, there are loopholes globally which make it very easy for gold from unregulated and/or illegal sources to enter their supply chain.

This makes even 'certified recycled' gold untraceable.

Flow Stud Earring No. 09 in Fairmined ECO 18k yellow gold

$1,080.00

One-of-a-kind Flow Stud No. 09

Similar to its buddy, Flow Stud No.08, this one is inspired by a calligraphic brushstroke, a circle drawn with brush and black ink – or golden ink, in this case!
The finished shape is a little flame-like, and the texture is just as rich as other pieces in this Series.

Cast in a lost-wax casting method, these rings start as waxes. The unusual texture comes from the varying tensile strength is the 2 ingredients which constitute the wax: local beeswax and portuguese pine resin. This combined wax is worked at room temperature – not too hot, not too cold. Folding it over itself, then stretching it, and then folding again, similar to taffy (but much stiffer), the texture eventually appears on the untouched top surface. This method takes a lot of time ad patience; it cannot be rushed.

The final shaping of the wax has to happen with very few movements, in one flow, which is where the Series gets its name. Each final piece is unique. That’s why I sell individual earrings – find your own pairing!

The gold I use to cast the pieces in this Series is 18k gold, but its origin is unusual – and super ethical. Unlike conventional (even ‘recycled’) gold, the entire supply chain of this gold is tightly traced from the mine to the goldsmith, under independent auditing. A goldsmith has to be licensed to sell it, and I am proud to have been one of Canada’s first to be able to offer it.
It is called Fairmined Eco Gold. The Oro Punto mine in the mountains of Peru is currently the only place certified for the ECO version of this assurance label. That is where the gold for this earring comes from.

Any Fairmined metal is much more ethical than conventional counterparts. What differentiates Fairmined ECO products from Fairmined products is the added assurance that it is mined completely without the used of chemicals such as mercury, which are otherwise very common in artisanal mining.

I am so pleased to be able to offer certified gold from responsible small-scale artisanal mining organizations, effecting socio-economic benefits for the miners, and their communities, and protection of the environment. It is Gold To Be Proud Of.
