Ruby is one of those classic precious gemstones. I really love rubies a lot.
You’d never guess it’s relatives: all members of the corundum family of stones share a common chemical composition and crystal structure. It is the trace amounts of different chemical elements which are responsible for the various colours of the different varieties. So get this: red corundum is called ruby, blue corundum is known as sapphire and all other colours are considered fancy coloured sapphires. Yup: sapphires and rubies are the same basic stone!
