Ta-dah … is that how you spell a fanfare sound? I am introducing my new work: the TwoByFour rings!
Each ring in this series starts as a length of metal that is 2 inches in length, and 4 millimeters in diameter. This is where the series derives its name: TwoByFour.
My passion lies in moving metal, and in making discoveries while doing so.
In this series, each initial length of silver, gold or titanium is forged in various directions before it is wound into a ring. Depending on the initial forging of each piece, each ends up being different! I love how each ring has various looks in itself, conditional on how it is worn on the finger: show the elegant edge where the planes change, or show two widened strips that look almost modernist. Some rings have a little ‘knob’ showing between the fingers, others span over two fingers. Discover the one that speaks to you!
These undoubtedly arose out of mentoring I have been doing (funded by a Tourism Heritage and Culture grant, Thank you!!) with master blacksmith John Little, and Brad Hall . I am planning to one day fill an exhibition with the outcomes of these explorations into much larger, hot-worked, non-precious pieces. The new rings are a pre-view of sorts; the first pieces of jewellery that came out of my forays into blacksmithing.
As with my previous work (i.e. Onefooter series), each one of the rings in this series is completely unique; even more so, I’d say. As with all my work, I continuously make discoveries, which is, after all, what turns my crank :)
And where can you see these new pieces? So far, only two galleries carry them: Noel Guyomarc’H in Montreal, and LA Pai in Ottawa – their annual Holiday Show will open Thursday, December 6th, from 6-9pm at 13 Murray Street in downtown Ottawa.
And if you are in Halifax, for goodness sakes, come by our Trunk show! I am sharing this with my friend, the wonderful potter Mindy Moore. It will be held
Incidentally, in the awesome photo on the Maystreet Studio opening page, comedian Cathy Jones is wearing -among others- one of my Onemeter bangles!
Besides seconds and several unusual one-of-a-kind pieces, I will have of course the Onefooter rings with me on Sunday, but this time expanded: Onefooter rings in gold and set with diamonds, as well as Twofooters, and even hefty Threefooters in silver! As the name suggests, each is made beginning with either two or three feet of silver, respectively. I had been selling these more unusual pieces in Montreal and other big cities before, but they are relatively new to the Maritimes.
