Ah yes: the joys of live music. I wanted to share with you what an amazing time I had last weekend listening to the amazing Carmina Burana live in concert here in Halifax. Carl Orff’s famous piece was presented by the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra, under direction of the wonderful and charismatic Dinuk Wijeratne.
Hearing this piece performed live has huge significance to me, because I used to be on stage with our Youth Choir back in Germany, when I was a teenager. So each movement is engrained in me … it was hard to sit still.
There are even more connections: I had spent time in retreat at the monastery of Benediktbeuren, where these Latin texts were discovered.
And our choir was fabulously lucky in that Carl Orff himself came and worked with us. What an amazing man he was! Our choir later was given the name “Carl Orff Choir”.
One of my favourite versions is this version from 1975; take the time and watch this, and notice all the details!
And lastly, while we are on the topic of live performances, you may recall my post about the concert with Sarah Slean and Symphony Nova Scotia. Well a wonderful video of that passionate performance just came out, look here.
