*Caveat on using the term “recycled gold”:

While I am very careful to source my precious metals only from SCS® certified suppliers (SCS® stands for Supply Chain Sustainability; they are the global leader in the field of sustainability standards and third-party certification). Most of my precious metals suppliers are also members of the Responsible Jewellery Council. However, I want to point out that ‘recycling gold' is not what is commonly understood by the term.

True recycling avoids things ending up in landfills. Gold, of course, wouldn’t.

Instead, gold is simply melted, refined and repurposed.

Although SCS® certified refineries must maintain auditable records of their suppliers, there are loopholes globally which make it very easy for gold from unregulated and/or illegal sources to enter their supply chain.

This makes even 'certified recycled' gold untraceable.

I have been a supporter of Farmers’ Markets all my life. For several years, I produced a ‘contemplative photography’ calendar about Halifax’s historic Brewery Market together with photographer Damian Lidgard. Unfortunately, we both ran out of time to continue that fun project.

My children remember our weekly trips to the market for as long as they can remember. It was a special treat to visit this past Saturday along with my now grown daughter Natalie, who has been living on her own for a number of years.

The markets in Halifax are in flux, and I don’t want to get into the politics here, other than saying that purchasing produce from farmers directly as a farmers market is in itself a political act. I like knowing that I support the producers directly. I guess that’s why I also attend the annual Garlic Festival at Nova Scotia’s award-winning Avondale Sky Winery. Watch a news article about the festival here, which includes recipes and cooking instructions!

I will be there this Saturday, September 19th. Take a drive through gorgeous Nova Scotia, come talk/eat/learn about garlic, and meet many artisans who will be exhibiting their crafts, including me!
