Change
Aaaah … change is in the air.
Children are returning to school, parents are sad yet relieved, students are arriving and tourists leaving, and finally the weather has turned. It never ceases to amaze me how this happens here in Nova Scotia: the switch from summer to fall takes but a day. And certainly after the LabourDay weekend, it is a done deal: summer is over.
There is always a tinge of sadness about this, and at the same time a sense of joy at the freshness of the new winds. I went for a long walk today, one of the first days of rain in a long series of sunny ones, and I just loved the strength of the wind and waters pouring from the heavens, and how alive everything was. And after the freshness of my brisk walk, I gladly returned to my stove to make a soothing soup of summer squash – such a turning-seasons meal -, filled out by a salad of fresh local greens and boiled corn: summer is still palpable, no doubt.
I went to a funeral and a wedding this past week; I worked hard for long hours in the studio; I went sailing in our little sailing dingy; I spent time on a sandy beach in the fog that then cleared and revealed a gorgeous day; and today I walked in the pouring rain. … It all seems fitting.
Oh, how good it is to be alive!
